I do not remember writing this. The ink dry, the thought not mine—or mine three days ago, or another’s who borrowed this hand while I slept. The fragment asks: how must the resisting medium thin or thicken along the path for the curve to hold its shape—a question of water, of air, of the materia sottile that fills what we call empty. The canal this morning carried a leaf in just such a spiral—not the Archimedean, but one that tightened as it neared the drain beneath the little bridge. The leaf slowed where the water near the bank lay almost still; the medium, with its invisible gradients of density, shaped the curve. I watched until the leaf was gone.
