The painter arranges gradations of light and shadow so that the eye, deceived by the contrast, sees depth where there is none; the musician arranges gradations of sound so that the ear, deceived by harmony, hears unity where there are only vibrating strings; the lover, in the same measure, arranges gradations of desire so that the soul, deceived by beauty, loves what it cannot hold — each a single hand guiding the senses toward a truth that is not in the thing, but in the space that separates the maker’s intention from the hunger of the one who receives. The third thing they pursue together is this grammar of persuasion: how every art teaches the flesh to read absence as presence and presence as destiny.
