Three things cast upon this page: a pump that yields no water, an English manuscript listing canals never dug, and physicians ignorant of the malady they seek to cure. Perhaps all speak of forza spesa male—energy dissipated because those who wield it do not know its true direction. The water does not rise because the conduit is clogged by those who have never seen the source of the spring; the manuscript records dreams of reclamation, not the study of currents; the physician applies remedies without ever measuring the flow of blood. The pump, the manuscript, the diagnosis—three errors of capacity. Perhaps true hydraulics is not a matter of pipes or disease, but of listening to the silence that precedes the rupture.
