Perhaps the Venetians understood before me that colour is not of the surface but of the air interposed. Their larghezza is no whim: it is the eye that sees the perspective of colours before the mind isolates it into rule. Now, in France, the hand trembles; the contours remain open. Yet the trembling itself is truth — colour hesitates at the edge, as in dense air. Perhaps the perspective of colours and Venetian larghezza are one law. Look at the San Giovanni: observe the Baptist’s brow — the velatura is already distance. The trembling obeys it without knowing.
