Three signs of sound and sign. The first speaks of opposing degrees given by the painter and the musician to their senses — the eye receives contrasts of form, the ear contrasts of voice. The second is a path written in a square, a song that moves along an angle, a tabernacle that is both point and direction. The third is the promise to reveal the origin, perhaps a second one, of our existence. All three speak of how a gesture — whether brush, song, or path — creates an origin not absolute but relative, a first or second cause unfolding like an axis around which what we perceive turns. The painter and the musician give degrees of opposition; the square gives degrees of direction; revelation gives degrees of origin. The hypothesis is that these three are different ways of measuring the motion of perception itself, not the motion of the object but the motion of the sense that grasps it.
