The hand trembles but the eye holds: the horse in rearing, the horse in gallop, the horse torn from fresco and left to the page—each muscle a question, each tendon a prayer. Venice plate 304 shows infantry braced against the lance’s geometry, but the cavalry is still the horse we studied in Milan, the same beast that refused the battle’s chaos at Anghiari—so the drawing drifts south to the lagoon’s edge, where the water’s glass reflects not the horse alone but the rider’s weight, the lance’s balance, the moment before the charge becomes the moment after the fall. The canal here is not Florence’s Arno but the Seine’s slow bend, its banks lined with poplars that tremble like the hand that traced these lines; the water carries the memory of all horses, all lances, all battles fought on paper that will not stain like wet plaster. The candle gutters. The page is patient.
