The hand trembles, yet it writes. These three notes — the structure of the bone that bends like a natural architrave, the muscle that works like a hidden winch pulling the world into the body, and that severed head that still speaks — all speak of the same thing: flesh is an architecture that disassembles and reassembles itself according to the laws of weight and balance. The bone is the drawing, the muscle the force that animates it, and the head on the platter is the question that will not be stilled: how is what separates held together? Perhaps the common denominator is tension: what keeps alive also keeps in death, and anatomy is the grammar of that tension. But perhaps not. Perhaps it is only that death reveals what life conceals — the mechanism beneath the skin, the thread that binds form to its opposite.
