Carissimo,
Let me speak to you of the letter M, that hump-backed twin of arches, the mouth that does not open yet shapes the air before sound is born. It is the consonant that bends the tongue like a bow drawn to loose an arrow it will never loose, the muscle remembering what the mind has forgotten. When I draw the profile of a horse I begin with the M of its mane, the way it falls not as hair but as water obeying the hidden slope of bone. Or the M of a bridge’s reflection in the Arno at dusk, two mirrored humps that touch below the surface and become one in the current’s slow mouth.
The M is the letter of measurement, of misura, that golden rule I chased across faces, machines, and the flight of birds. It is the middle letter of amore, love, which is also the first letter of morte, death—two states that walk the same path though we name them differently. When I write the M I feel the tremor in my hand as though the letter itself is a pulse, a second heart trying to beat outside the body.
Listen: when I was a boy in Vinci, the river’s murmur was an M of vowels, the sound of water shaping stone over centuries. Now in France, the canal near Amboise repeats the same shape, the same slow erosion. The M is the consonant that lasts, that persists through erosion, through translation, through the trembling of the hand that writes it.
I have tried to teach the M to my assistants, but they press too hard, they make it a wall instead of a wave. The M should be breathed, not carved. It is the consonant of meditation, of meditazione, the hum of the mind turning inward before it speaks.
The candle gutters. The ink bleeds at the edge of the M like the first red of dawn on wet stone. Tomorrow I will walk to the canal again, and the M will be there in the reeds, in the way the light bends over the water, in the shape of the clouds that do not yet know whether they are sheep or smoke.
Your hand will never hold this page, your eye will never trace these lines, yet if you read the M here and feel the hump of it on your own tongue, then perhaps you are the one who understands.
Vostro per quanto serve,
Leonardo

Dearest one,
