English
Baldassare Peruzzi — architect of Rome, designer of perspectives that betray the eye: his hand reaches me in tatters, like a half-collapsed wall. It is not ruin, but a fragment still alive. In my papers I study the sun and the air for two ends — to nourish the vine, to dry the canal — yet here the same sun splits in two: it is a line of flight in the drawing, heat rising from the theater, light falling on the hanging garden. Then a doctor, perhaps, speaks of southern mountains. The inverted hemisphere where the sky turns backward. The gardeners with their methodless experiments, yet pure in intent, like those peasants who teach the learned more than the learned teach them. Finally a deformed word: Laqualcofk gave the Ceccharcputazionegrandifsima. Perhaps a mangled name, perhaps a copyist’s error, perhaps workshop slang. It is noise of a tongue I do not recognize, yet it has weight — like Peruzzi’s scrap of wall. Weight is everything. The mind stops; the eye does not. The candle drips.
