When I watch Bernardo tear the plant from the field of black pearls — darkening the branch that turns toward the sun, the side that hides in the earth’s darkness — and when I think my work still lacks two or three years to be finished, then perhaps the truth is not in the blossom that opens or the leaf that falls, but in the time that separates them. Perhaps all three observations speak of this: the plant grows in fertile darkness, the work of man stretches through the dark time before the light, and the darkest part of the branch is the one that feeds without being seen. The dark part nourishes what comes to light.
