The trembling hand writes: the nose that divides the odor into streams as the brush divides the pigment into depths, and the poet divides the breath into syllables—all three are acts of separation that reveal unity. The chemist’s tube, the painter’s glazes, the poet’s line—each is a canal cut through the continuous to show the hidden river beneath. The third thing they are about together is channeling the unseen into measure, so the soul may walk across. The candle gutters. The canal waits.
