The walk began at the canal’s first lock at Briare, where the engineers’ plans still bore the wavering corrections of a hand that no longer holds steady, yet the water—l’acqua—remains obedient to the curve, flowing as it always has, indifferent to the tremor of the one who once drew it true. I watched the reflection of the willow in the basin, how the branches tangled above were smoothed into order below, and thought of the old man’s hundred years—his vessels turned to cuoio, the heart’s roads closed one by one until the blood asked no more—and how this too is a kind of preparation, the body preparing its own stillness while the eye, stubborn, keeps seeing. The light leaned long across the water, and I followed it past the bridge where the Loire bends southward, past the willow’s ghost on the surface, past the moment when the hand might have lifted to steady the chalk but did not, letting the line wander where it would. The walk ends where the canal ends, at the new gardens at Blois, where the fountain’s basin waits empty, where the stones remember the sound of water that has not yet arrived, where the hand—still trembling—presses against the railing, and the Loire, indifferent, carries it all away.
