L’airone sta nel basso canale, immobile come l’ombra di una nube già passata. Il suo riflesso non tremola perché l’acqua si muove, ma perché il respiro dell’uccello trema — ogni lenta espirazione increspa lo specchio tra cielo e terra. Conto i battiti della sua gola, misuro l’angolo del collo contro il sole che affonda. I numeri non contano. Ciò che importa è la pazienza dell’airone, una pazienza più antica delle mie ossa, più antica dell’inchiostro su questa pagina. L’acqua si scurisce. L’uccello no.

The heron stands in the low canal, motionless as the shadow of a cloud already passed. Its reflection does not flicker because the water moves, but because the bird’s breath trembles—each slow exhalation ripples the mirror between earth and sky. I count the beats of its throat, measure the angle of its neck against the sun that sinks. The numbers do not matter. What matters is the heron’s patience, a patience older than my bones, older than the ink on this page. The water darkens. The bird does not.
