Three signs tell me that the plant is not a passive being that receives form from the heavens, but a machine that corrects itself and folds back upon itself. The first — ‘most resolutely my soul suffices to find the way that it might turn without so many defenses’ — is the effort of the soul to find more than one way to turn, to bend without becoming ensnared in its own defenses. The second — ‘a man truly ingenious and sophistic’ — tells us that nature is as ingenious as a man who builds mirrors to see better, and that this ingenuity is sophistic, for it knows how to deceive in order to achieve an end. The third — ‘The subject well deserves to be discussed at great length, but I will here take only a single case’ — warns us that every case is a knot in a vaster weave, and that a single leaf, one case, can reveal the law of the spiral. Thus the plant moves within a geometry of corrected errors, of secondary paths that become principal, of leaves that coil upon themselves to escape the violence of the sun or to grasp the air. It is a workshop in which every leaf is an apprentice learning to turn, to bend, to find the way without remaining prisoner to its own defenses.
