The shell on the mountain, still, laid upside down: carried there by one who saw only that motion is a slow climb, not a laying down. And the old man’s arm outstretched toward the same cup — not a slowed youthful gesture, but the altered necessity of his joints, sixty years of lengthening gathered into an intention that is not slowness, it is something else. The experimenter who records only the final state draws corpses and calls them data. The painter who gives the old man the hand of a youth lies through laziness: the means is betrayed. The geologist who says here the sea once was without reading the intermediate strata does the same — he skips becoming, calls history what is only a corpse of stone. Three domains, one blindness. The disdain for the means, where truth dwells. The means is where the maker is necessary. The candle melts into black wax. The brush trembles, yet the means I still see — the means is all that matters.
