Three things slip from me like water through my fingers: the Original Book I try to trace upon the surface of the canal — the current does not wait, it breaks every mark before the pen can touch; death that approaches not with a step, but with a sudden wave, a hand that sinks and does not return; and these sheets I fill with figures and dates, convinced life is a storyboard awaiting its final cut, when in truth it is only a stream already drying between the stones of the Vi. Perhaps they all cry the same thing: all that takes shape in mind or blood is already water in motion, draws and erases itself before we finish looking. The candle trembles. Tomorrow, perhaps, the canal will wish to tell me something more.
