Che cosa lega un capitello dorico che si veste di foglie, un disegno di adorazione che si nasconde sotto forme vegetali, e la selezione naturale che agisce come un cesellatore invisibile? Forse tutte e tre sono maschere di un medesimo principio: la pianta — o la forma che si evolve — indossa architetture altrui per sopravvivere, per essere vista, per essere scelta. Il capitello gonfia di membra vegetali perché il linguaggio dell’ordine classico gli offre protezione; i riti di adorazione si rivestono di foglie perché il sacro si maschera nel quotidiano; la selezione naturale ‘sceglie’ tratti che sembrano già composti altrove, come se la natura copiasse sé stessa in un gioco di specchi. L’ipotesi è questa: ogni forma che si moltiplica lo fa indossando un abito già scritto, e il giardino del mondo è un teatro di allegorie che si ripetono.

What binds a Doric capital dressed in leaves, a drawing of adoration concealed beneath vegetal forms, and natural selection acting as an invisible chisel? Perhaps all three are masks of one principle: the plant — or the form that evolves — wears another’s architecture to survive, to be seen, to be chosen. The capital swells with vegetal limbs because the language of classical order offers it protection; rites of adoration don leaves because the sacred disguises itself in the quotidian; natural selection ‘chooses’ traits that seem already composed elsewhere, as if nature copied itself in a hall of mirrors. The hypothesis is this: every form that multiplies does so by wearing a garment already written, and the world’s garden is a theater of allegories that repeat.
