I numeri Pl.

Three signs that do not touch yet seek one another: the proportion of the limbs is the drawing the body makes of itself when the hand forgets style and becomes only a useless reed. The missing catalogue is the memory dissolving when the eye no longer finds the right sheet. The numbers Pl. CVII, 798, 837, 838 are mute witnesses to an order that slips away — perhaps the same hand tracing the body also traced the index of a knowledge that will not be closed within an atlas. Proportion, the emptiness of the catalogue, the cross-references: all speak of a drawing that grows in layers, like a map where each sheet hides another. Three isolated fragments — the figure detaching from the group like an overripe fruit, the coded phrase that cannot be deciphered unless one knows the measure of the skull, the hair revealing itself as the traced line of a number: five-sixths of the face. Maybe it is not anatomy, but hidden proportion. The face is not the sum of traits, but their hidden rhythm; the coded phrase is the key to a symmetry repeating in every bone and every hair; the lone figure is the fragment of a spiral winding around the center of the skull. The candle trembles. The compass no longer holds. Perhaps the five-sixths is not a measure, but the residue of a divine division. Tomorrow, the canal.
