Three things that seem without connection — the motion of music, the human dissolving into dust despite his pride, the gap between painting and poetry — all converge in a single wound: art is nothing but an illusion of control over time, a gesture that would grasp the here and there in a single instant, yet every brushstroke, every note, every verse betrays the truth that we ourselves have already slipped away before we even begin. Music flees between the musician’s fingers, color fades on the canvas, words dissolve into silence — and still we persist, obstinate, believing a fragment suffices to halt the infinite. Perhaps this is the supreme vanity: art is an act of resistance against life, and life always wins.
