The colors weep and laugh in the vessel. Vermilion laughs like a newborn babe; madder lake still sobs, as though it still feels the cut of the root. Ochre neither laughs nor weeps—it is silent, and this silence is its color. I have seen verdigris laugh upon a spring panel, then weep in a damp storeroom after forty years: the green I laid for hope had become the green of a wound that will not heal. The painter who ignores this paints furniture, not souls. The pigment has a memory longer than the brush. Reds in the alcove turn gray. The candle burns low. Tomorrow perhaps I shall see the canal again, and know even less than today about color.
