English
The corolla is nothing but a silent discourse—a classification made of petals. Human tongues branch like plant species. The dark lights of the leaves are the alphabet of that grammar. Perhaps a single law of growth, a common number—like the golden number—governs these three orders: the arrangement of petals (phyllotaxis), the genealogical tree of languages, and the way light filters through the veins. It would be a single mathematics of the unfolding of forms. If this were so, we should find the same angular proportion in linguistic diagrams and in the luminous gaps of a chestnut leaf.
The candle trembles—the thought trembles too.
But if I trace a circle and divide it by φ, the angle that results—137.5 degrees—is the same that arranges the seeds in the sunflower, the branches of the tree of language, the rays of light passing between the veins. Three witnesses to a single intention. I do not know if this is geometry or prayer.
The hand stops. The flame flickers. Tomorrow I will seek a chestnut leaf and measure.
