Entrambi i casi sembrano grazia.

The walnut root I split this morning bore a figure I did not deserve — a woman turning, her hand raised against wind or light, I cannot say which. The groove made her; I only followed the cut. This is the danger of observing too long: the boundary between what is given and what is made grows so thin that a man no longer knows whether the Maker had hidden His figures in the wood so that we might free them, or whether the greedy eye did not press its own shapes into indifferent matter. Both cases seem grace. No one unravels the doubt. The fire is ash. The hand stopped at the cut, then trembled — always afterward.
