The plucked string divides into parts the eye cannot see, yet the ear hears — thirds, fifths, sounds within sound, and the interval of the fifth that the soul savors arises from the simple ratio of two to three. Then the heart contracts without rest, pushing the blood like water in a bladder, while the sinews tighten and the nerves transmit the command like wires that make a bell ring. The physical vibration and the motion of the soul would then be two aspects of a single mathematical harmony — a divine proportion audible in sound and visible in the motion of the flesh. But the hand trembles, and the candle gutters as thought dissolves into the silence of the canal, where the air itself seems to recall a shape already heard.
