Perhaps the Venetians understood — before me — that color is not of the surface but of the air interposed. Their larghezza is no whim: it is the eye that sees the perspective of colors before the mind isolates it into rule. Now, in France, the hand trembles and can no longer close the contours. But perhaps the trembling itself is truth: the color hesitating at the edge, as in dense air. The works I execute here — the Saint John — test whether the perspective of colors and Venetian larghezza are one law. The trembling obeys it without knowing. Look at the Baptist’s brow: the glaze is already distance.
