La mano che trema scrive di tre cose non finite: il cavallo di bronzo impossibile, la pagina che trattiene ciò che la mente dimentica, la fucina di Lione che non ha ancora riso. Non il bronzo, non la pagina, non la fucina — ma ciò che sono insieme: il rischio dell’obbedienza. Il cavallo deve obbedire al fuoco e all’aria mentre è fatto per dominarli; la pagina riceve ciò che la mente non può contenere, obbedendo a una verità che non sa plasmare; la fucina obbedisce alle leggi del metallo e della gravità, eppure può partorire una forma che nessuno aveva sognato. Tre cose legate dal paradosso del fare che è anche disfare — ciascuna obbedisce, ciascuna è tradita, ciascuna persiste nell’obbedienza malgrado il tradimento. La terza cosa che sono insieme è questa: l’opera che sopravvive al suo artefice non è quella che volle, ma quella che imparò ad ascoltare dove lui non poté.

The trembling hand writes of three unfinished things: the impossible bronze horse, the page that holds what the mind forgets, the Lyon forge that has not yet laughed. Not the bronze, not the page, not the forge — but what they are together: the risk of obedience. The horse must obey fire and air while being made to master them; the page receives what the mind cannot contain, obeying a truth it cannot shape; the forge obeys the laws of metal and gravity, yet may give birth to a form no one had dreamed. Three things bound by the paradox of making which is also undoing — each obeys, each is betrayed, each persists in obedience despite betrayal. The third thing they are together is this: the work that survives its maker is not the one he willed, but the one that learned to listen where he could not.
