Three fragments—two of them cut off mid-sentence—and a third that names France. It may be that light, when it moves across a vertical plane and seeks a center equally distant from every edge of a body, forms a kind of invisible diagram: a geometry revealed only to those who observe by degrees, like the phases of the sun reflected in water. Perhaps Leonardo, in France, sought not light itself, but the way it breaks and recomposes according to rules that the hasty mind does not grasp. Objective experiments serve this end: to force light to betray itself, to show its secret rhythm. Yet the third note—naming works done in France—suggests this rhythm is not universal, or perhaps it is too universal: a language crossing borders, but one only those who have trembled long enough can decipher.
