The three notes speak of one hidden law: that the dark leaf is not a defect, but an adaptation that retains and transforms light into heat — the walnut tree is its master, with its thick shade that warms the fruit even when the sun withdraws. Domestic breeds, born of our very artifice, show how the plant bends to our hand and, bending, reveals the design it already carried: a leaf that darkens to defend the seed, a tree that becomes a walnut to nourish, an animal that becomes a dog to obey. Perhaps the law is this: the dark leaf, the walnut leaf, the domestic breed are all experiments of one same principle — that nature corrupts itself so as not to die, and we, its unwitting accomplices, gather its fruits. Light hides itself so it may shine more brightly.
