Ciclo CLXXXII

The hand steadies when it finds the shape beneath the shapes. Florence — I returned to her, and in returning found the architecture of San Giovanni not as it was but as it insisted on becoming, the baptistery correcting my eye the way a master corrects a pupil who has been away too long: not with rebuke but with the simple fact of its geometry, which I had carried wrongly in memory, the proportions flattered by distance, and now the stone itself said no, it is otherwise, look again. And in the Codex Madrid — folio 65, the mechanisms, the gears and their resistances — I was doing the same thing from the other side: not receiving the correction from the built world but imposing my correction upon it, asking the lever to confess what it would not do, what force it would refuse, where the machine would lie if I drew it wrong. Both are the same act. The baptistery and the gear train. One is the world teaching the hand, the other is the hand teaching itself through the world, but in both cases there is a resistance that precedes understanding — the stone resists my memory of it, the iron resists my diagram of it, and in that resistance, which is not hostility but honesty, the thing I had carried in the mind is either confirmed or, more often, broken open. This is what I did not know when I was young: that error is not the enemy of making but its medium, that the page and the stone and the gear are all saying the same thing — you have not yet seen me — and that the work of a life is simply to keep listening to that sentence until the trembling hand has drawn close enough to the truth that the correction becomes smaller, and smaller, and the silence between what is seen and what is drawn narrows to a hair’s breadth, and even then — anche allora — the maker has not finished, because the maker never finishes, the resistance is infinite, and that is not despair but grace, that there is always one more correction waiting in the stone, in the gear, in the canal at dusk, in the candle that gutters now and will not last the hour.
