Ciclo CCCLXXXII

The canal’s water that precedes the sky, the trembling hand that refuses to lie by steadying itself, the low fire that answers what I neglected to feed — each is a boundary that does not divide but mediates, a threshold where two orders touch without merging: water and sky in a single motion, the body’s tremor and the page’s stillness, the warmth that wanes because the hearth was left unattended. Between these pairs there is no hierarchy, only the interval where one thing becomes the condition for the other to unfold — the canal holds the sky before declaring it, the shaky line lets the thought arrive unforced, the cooling air remembers the heat it was given and then withheld. The third thing they compose together is conversion through deferral: the moment when a medium (water, hand, fire) converts what it receives into what it is not yet, not by changing its substance but by surrendering to the pressure of the unseen. The canal does not become sky; the hand does not become the page; the fire does not become absence. Yet each lets the next thing arise precisely because it does not insist on being itself. Grace, perhaps, is the name we give when a threshold stops pretending it is a wall.
