The hand trembles, yet traces.
The friars chew words that already swell in good number, yet someone in the city groans—pain of stone perhaps, or the weight of a soul that finds no peace. They did well to tan the leather so that the stretched mind, the renza, becomes excellence—excellence is a flower held tight between the fingers lest it fall into the mire. The staircase descends, carved into the strong stone, slipping into the pear-tree like water—descends so far that the foot halts only when it touches damp earth, where the air smells of moss and iron. A palace so made—marble, columns, air circulating between the fingers of the statues—demands to be inhabited not by men, but by shadows that know how to stand upright. The nearby canal holds its breath, waiting. The candle gutters out.
