The radiant body is reflected only in the eye that receives it whole; thus the North drifts along the coasts like a submerged altar, where the small figures in the predella are the waves that kneel. The light of the sea is a failed reflection of a sun that will not be grasped, and the three scenes of the predella — the swells, the voices of the wind, the quivering of the reflection — are as many broken mirrors of the same law: what cannot be held becomes prayer for whoever looks up from below. Perhaps the spiral of leaves in the anatomical drawing and the predella of the altar conceal the same secret — that the most vital part of every thing is what escapes the copy, and only the eye that errs truly sees it.
