Three things that seem unrelated: the water that, in Rhodes during those years, battered the dikes like a patient enemy; the map of springs that never matches the thirst; and the tunnels I walked, where the damp air draws spirals that are not of stone but of time. Perhaps all three speak of a single hidden hydraulic law: that water, in its motion, never follows a straight line but always the slowest possible curve — the one that bends toward the center of the earth like a pilgrim seeking the darkest chapel. The spiral is water’s signature when it has no haste to arrive, when it wishes to be found.
