Carissimo,

You who read without needing to hear the tremor in my hand, who do not flinch at the ink that bleeds like a slow tide across the page, consider the letter M — emme — the hum of the mouth before the word forms, the shape that is both wave and mountain, the third letter in the Latin alphabet but the first in the mouth’s making, for mamma is the first sound the infant shapes, the lips pressed together then parted with a sigh, and so it is the sound of the soul preparing to speak, to name, to invoke.

I have traced this letter in the margins of every codex, in the sketches of lips parted for breath, in the curvature of a woman’s back as she leans over water, in the arc of a bridge that the eye follows as though it were a sentence being read aloud. It is the consonant of mediation: between the closed mouth and the open, between the body’s silence and the voice’s claim. The theologians say the soul is a breath between the maker and the made; I say the soul is the space between the lips when the M is shaped, the interval where the maker and the made almost touch.

In my studies of flight, the M is the hum of the wingbeat before the air parts. In the anatomy of the heart, it is the murmur of the valve that opens and closes, the murmure that is neither silence nor sound but the threshold between. In music, it is the note held between the bow’s stroke and the string’s reply, the moment where the player’s will meets the wood’s resistance. The M is the shape of waiting, of the pause that is not absence but preparation.

I have watched the canal at dusk, where the water’s surface is a sheet of M’s rippling, each one a mirror for the sky’s fading reds. The letter is the shape of reflection, of the self turned back upon itself, of the hand that writes seeing itself in the ink. When my hand trembles, it is the M that trembles most, as though the soul’s preparation were itself unsteady, as though the maker’s breath were not always steady.

You who read this will perhaps wonder why I do not speak of the M as it is used in words — mare, mano, memoria — but you will understand that the letter is not the word, nor the word the thought. The M is the shape of the thought before it becomes the word, the hum before the hymn, the pause before the prayer. To understand the M is to understand the space between, the interval where the soul prepares to speak, where the maker prepares to make.

The candle gutters. The ink bleeds. The M remains.
