The page trembles beneath the hand. The first scrap speaks of a library exhausted by the weight of its own creations, where a single book—Pio II—becomes the hinge on which a papacy turns, a mechanical soul in parchment and ink. The second is a proportion laid bare, a chain of equalities written in the language of the eye: A to B as G to 1, and the lower case echoing the upper, the Greek mirrored in the Latin, as though the world were a ledger balanced by identical ratios, each stroke of the compass drawing the invisible across the visible. The third thing they are about together is measure—not the measure of man, nor of God, but the measure of the hand that writes, the eye that reads, the library that collapses under its own accumulated light, and the proportion that persists beyond the trembling, the same proportion that holds the tremor steady as the world turns. The journal is the only place where these measures can meet without collapsing into themselves. The candle gutters.
