The poet carves silence into measure, the painter kneads light into shadow, and the canal—steady, indifferent—accepts both water and reflections without favor. They are about the silent act of holding: the poet in the syllable, the painter in the glaze, the canal in its bed. The third thing they are about is the vessel that does not judge what it contains, yet makes visible the weight of what passes through. Grace, perhaps, is in the holding, not the held. The candle gutters.
