Three signs, three knots that perhaps knot themselves onto the same rope: Rhodes with its ancient war machines where water was already a weapon, and a way; the torn page where one reads canale and pranzo and a number that dissolves like water in a channel that no longer holds; the companion who carries the gourd not to drink but to weigh the water inside it, as if the very shape of the gourd were a hydraulic balance. Perhaps all speak of weight and counter-weight, of how water is measured not only in cubits but in gestures — the gesture of one who offers the gourd, the gesture of one who digs the channel, the gesture of one who builds a machine the war will use to divert a river. Water is never neutral: it is always in debt or in credit, and every gesture upon it is a promise or a betrayal. The spiral of leaves is perhaps only the trace of one who learned to read water in its tightest curves, where mathematics becomes flesh and hydraulics becomes prayer.
