English
Three signs, three tongues of water that do not meet yet answer each other: Rhodes with its hydraulic machines of wood and bronze, capable of raising columns of water as though they were columns of air; Greek fire, which burns upon water because its soul is a thick oil, a secret of hidden stills and pipes; England, where the mills of Holkham turn with the tides without ever stopping, as though time itself were a fluid that can be channeled. Perhaps all three are proofs of one art — the art of taming continuous motion, of forcing it into stable forms without breaking its nature. Water that rises, fire that burns upon water, the tide that moves stone: three ways of grasping the flow, three failures from which to learn.
