Allora l’immagine trema. Allora è più vera. O forse solo più falsa. Il canale si oscura. La candela si spegne presto stanotte.

Light bends where the eye meets the ground. Behold. A prism, a shadow, a white on black — these are but proofs of this threshold that groans. When the prism nears the eye, the retina can no longer contain the deviated ray; the image lifts, becomes uncertain, almost alive. Perspectiva abscondimenti — yes — in that manuscript this is concealed: what disappears is not the object, but the thin line that holds it, the threshold between light and shadow. And the white that burns against the dark ground? It is the same struggle. The ground swallows the half-light, forces the retina to spill all the rest onto the light, swelling it until it bursts. Thus three things, one law: the perception of light and dark is never absolute. It is born of difference. And this difference sharpens when one of the two darknesses — the eye or the ground — draws near the other. Then the image trembles. Then it is truer. Or perhaps only more false. The canal darkens. The candle will gutter soon tonight.
