Three fragments of a single thought that still does not reveal itself. The timbers that twist in the veins — are they not the fibers themselves obeying a law of torsion, like the stem of the vine or the stalk of the sunflower? The muscles, then, whether German or not, are spiral machines, fibers that coil to contract without tearing, to resist the force that stretches them. And those German notes — numbers, perhaps measures of resistance or angles — might be the key: the same principle that bends wood makes muscle work, makes the German screw hold. A hidden spiral in the fibers, in the numbers, in the veins. Perhaps life itself is a torsion that opposes breaking, a design that repeats from wood to muscle, from peasant to soldier. But it is only a hypothesis waiting for the knife or the compass to be disproved or confirmed.
