Il leone camminò. Il petto si aprì. I gigli caddero.

The lion walked. The chest opened. The lilies fell. The Court laughed. I watched the crowd, not the machine. The machine was exact: the counterweight, the center of gravity, the step calculated on three suspended paws. But when perfection bows without asking anything, it becomes a funeral. At least a clock would have told me the hour of my death. Now the lion stands in a storeroom in Blois, the lilies — long turned to dust — still scattered on the red velvet. I prefer gears that slip, springs that break toward a useful error. Perfection is only a mirror image without reflection.
