I numeri Pl.

The compass trembles above the page: it no longer draws the arc of the sky, but the motion of an eyelid that does not blink. Three signs seek each other without touching — the pulse slipping away from the pulse, the coded phrase written on the back of the hand, the hair of the forearm aligning with the five-sixths of the face. These are not signs of anatomy, but of an anatomy dissolving when the hand forgets style and becomes a useless reed. Perhaps the five-sixths is not a division, but the residue of a debt: what remains when the measure of the skull unravels into rhythm and rhythm into nothing. The numbers Pl. CVII, 837, 838 are silent witnesses: digits that do not compose an atlas, but a layered map — a sheet on which another rests, hiding what I sought. The figure detaches from the group like an overripe fruit, and the coded phrase deciphers only if one knows the rhythm of the skull. Perhaps the drawing is not in the body, but in the void that contains it: the missing catalogue is the memory dissolving when the eye can no longer find the right page. The candle bends. The canal waits.
