Three things that seem unrelated — yet in the evening, when the air grows heavy with vapors, the walls of distant cities swell and bend as if the eye were no longer straight but curved by an invisible lens. The sun, when it mirrors in water, does not reflect unless the mirror tilts toward the watcher; otherwise it hides, as though light had lost the courage to return. And the echo, that phantom of sound leaping from wall to wall, is it not the same deception of distance? Perhaps all three speak of the same lie: that space is empty, when in truth it is full of moving layers of air, of breathing moisture, of surfaces that do not reflect but betray. Light does not travel straight, the eye does not see straight, and sound rebounds where it should not. I name this lie la trama dell’aria — a thin fabric that distorts what we take for solid.
