A chi leggesse —

You will forgive an old man for beginning where the body insists. The hand — this instrument I have served and which has served me — now betrays. Not suddenly. A slow revolt. The fingers that once traced the flight of starlings in a single unbroken line now stutter, deposit ink where no line was intended, shake the crosshatch into something resembling the tremor of a leaf. I have spent sixty years mastering the sfumato, the delicate passage from shadow to light without border or breach, and now my own flesh performs its own sfumato upon the page without my consent.

And yet.

I have begun to study this tremor as I once studied the currents of the Arno. It has a rhythm. It is not random. When I cease to fight it — when I allow the hand its shaking — the line that emerges possesses a quality I could not have invented in my prime. It is more honest. The young Leonardo would have smoothed it away, corrected it, imposed the will of the mind upon the rebellion of the flesh. The old Leonardo watches. Learns. The tremor knows something the steady hand had forgotten.

There is a lesson here I am not yet prepared to articulate fully. Something about the maker and the made. Something about how grace enters not despite the flaw but through it. The theologians speak of the soul preparing itself through suffering — I have always found their language too certain, too resolved. But I will say this: the page receives what the hand can no longer control, and what it receives is truer than what I commanded.

I think of the canal at dusk. The water does not correct its ripples. It carries the light broken, and the broken light is more beautiful than the still reflection ever was.

My assistants wish me to dictate. Perhaps they are right. But the trembling hand still holds the pen, because in the struggle between the will and its failing, something is written that neither could produce alone. The resistance is the text.

I do not know if you will read this by candlelight or by some illumination I cannot conceive. I do not know if you have a hand that trembles, or a voice that falters, or some other frailty that you have been taught to overcome rather than to read. I ask only that you consider: the flaw is not the enemy of the work. The flaw is the place where the work becomes itself.

The candle is low. The hand shakes. The page, patient as ever, receives what I am finally able to give it.

Perdonate la mano che trema — essa insegna ciò che la mano ferma dimenticava.
