Three threads intertwined in the fabric of the eye: the lightning that splits the sky is nothing but the broken reflection of water in motion; the flowered landscapes and hydrographic charts are but maps of shadows and reflections, where the boundary between earth and mirror dissolves; and the derivative shadow that darkens is perhaps the shadow itself multiplying, bending, retreating according to the laws of refraction and perspective? Thus, everything reduces to a single problem: how the eye, deceived by light, constructs the likeness of the world. Lightning, the flower, the map — they are variants of the same optical deception, necessary so that the mind may grasp the unattainable. And if this is so, then painting, the map, memory itself are but projections of a single law: what is seen is always already translated, and to betray is the very way of seeing.
