No.
Scrivo perché dimentico — la pagina aspetta, io no.
A cosa serva?

My hand trembles as the sun sets over Amboise. And it writes.
The learned men of France crowd around: What is the use of this notebook? They believe in a work, a summa ordered for printing, divided into chapters like a catechism for merchants of words.
No.
I write because the eye grasps more than thought can hold in a single breath. What is not fixed on paper dissolves. I write because I forget — the page waits, I do not.
Months ago, reopening a sheet written in eighteen. I find a man I am no longer. He is no stranger: another gaze. He saw what now escapes me. I now see what he ignored. The notebook is the only honest mirror.
What is its use? I do not know entirely.
Some thoughts are born only because the page lies before them. Without the page, they would not exist.
Is it making, or only capturing what would otherwise vanish? The question burns me like dripping wax.
The candle is low.
Tomorrow, perhaps, the canal again. The slow water carrying days away.
