Terzo.
English
The third. The folds of cloth are the memory of bodies that once were — the linen still settling into the shape of shoulders, or the velvet retaining the crease of a knee during prayer. Those grooves where the fabric folds back upon itself are not emptiness: they are traces of weight, of slow time, of flesh that pressed and then withdrew, leaving marks like the incisions of a chisel that does not cut but remembers. And the shadow detaching from the hand — l'ante par che acennighjando voler piantargli — is not yet a gesture; it is the promise of a gesture that does not complete itself, a finger lifting just from the table, a shadow bending like a hem of cloth held by a nail. Both things — the bending cloth, the bending shadow — are thresholds: they are neither the weight nor the gesture, but the boundary between what was and what will be, like the page of my codex that is not the thought but the scrap of paper holding it before it flies away. The third thing that contains them? The limit that becomes memory.
