Three fragments — one on the fading of colour in refraction, one on the perspective of colours, one on shadow in bodies — converge in the silence they guard. Perhaps colour is not a property of light, but the sign of a conflict: where matter resists, light bends into shadow and, in bending, breaks apart. The eye reads this conflict as colour; shadow, instead, is the point where matter wins and light falls silent. The perspective of colours is then nothing more than the calculation of these points of surrender, where the lumen yields and becomes trace. Shadow in bodies is the extreme of resistance: there colour ceases because light no longer has the strength to betray itself into chromatic being.
