English
The heron is a compass walking upon the water. It does not ask for water; it asks for the time in which the water submits to it. Its neck bends at angles no other bird dares measure; its folded wings measure the air even before they move. And between its being and mine, something frays — not time itself, but the skin of time, thin as the wax on the candle. The page will count the heartbeats, yet the heron’s reflection in the water counts nothing, for it is no number: it is a shadow leaning toward the sunset. God made the numbers, but the air and I made the silence. The candle gutters out.
