Il leone camminò, sì. Il petto si aprì come una confessione troppo pulita. I gigli caddero in silenzio; la Corte batté le mani, denti stretti nel sorriso — ecco il mio rimorso. Per un anno intero misurai il passo del gatto: l'articolazione della spalla, il peso smistato sulle tre zampe in volo, il calcolo esatto del momento in cui il mondo si illude di vedere un animale vivo. Ma era soltanto un trucco, una ripetizione senz'anima. Una macchina che si muove senza fallire, senza desiderare, è meno di una che si inceppa verso Dio. Ne ho costruite entrambe. Le preferisco rotte. Ora il leone riposa in qualche inventario, i gigli ridotti in polvere da tempo. Avrei dovuto farlo battere il tempo, non fingere il respiro. La candela trema verso la data che non ricordo più.

The lion walked, yes. The chest opened like a confession too clean. The lilies fell in silence; the Court clapped, teeth clenched in a smile — here is my remorse. For a whole year I measured the cat’s step: the articulation of the shoulder, the weight distributed across the three paws in flight, the exact calculation of the moment when the world believes it sees a living animal. But it was only a trick, a soulless repetition. A machine that moves without failing, without desiring, is less than one that stumbles toward God. I have built both. I prefer the broken ones. Now the lion rests in some inventory, the lilies long since reduced to dust. I should have made it beat time, not feign breath. The candle trembles toward the date I no longer remember.
