The hand trembles, yet it writes. Three things I see: the bone that bends like a natural architrave, the muscle that works like a secret winch pulling the world into the body, and that severed head which still speaks — not a body held together, but a body traversed. Every bone, every bundle, every humor is a transit point where matter and energy exchange without cease. Flesh is the drawing that erases itself as the hand traces it; anatomy, the map of these passages. Perhaps every figure I draw is but the trace of a movement that continues beyond the page, beyond life. The hand trembles because it feels the body dissolving even as it grasps it. Climate, food — they do not carve the muscle as the chisel carves marble: too fluid, too indirect. And yet the observer persists in seeking a law within them. But the true engine is not outside: it is the very gesture of generating, repeated in the muscle as in the leaf, in the writing hand as in the grasping one. Prove to me that a muscle grows or wastes without its history of conception being altered, and I shall cast the notebook into the fire. Perhaps the body is no object. It is a place of passage.
